Featured on CBS News for Women’s History Month: Stories of WWII Rosie The Riveters Brought to Life in Animated Film
Almost ten years in the making, The Girl with the Rivet Gun is an unconventional animated documentary short based on the adventures of three real-life “Rosie the Riveters” - Esther Horne, Susan Taylor King and Mildred Crow Sargent. From vastly different backgrounds, these three women came of age in an America united by war but struggling with divisions of gender, economics and race.
"Documentary filmmakers Anne de Mare and Kirsten Kelly have a knack for extracting intimate and personal stories from large, complex social issues. Their latest short, The Girl With The Rivet Gun, takes a closer look at the real faces behind cartoon icon Rosie the Riveter. Bringing their stories to life with charming and creative cardboard animation by Danielle Ash, this all-female production celebrates the resourcefulness, adaptability and ingenuity of the first generation of Rosies as well as their descendants.” - Bubble Blabber
“Quite the treat!” - Reel Chicago
"Creative, beautiful and fun!” - OC Movie Reviews
"I couldn’t help but be utterly entranced by it!” - The DreamCage

“Kudos to the filmmakers for keeping the story of ‘Rosie’ alive.” - Red Carpet Crash
"A major part of what makes The Girl with the Rivet Gun such a great watch is Danielle Ash’s unique style of animation consisting entirely of cardboard. Her compositions and arrangements have an experimental/DIY edge (in the vein of Michel Gondry — think The Science of Sleep) and give the film a lot of interesting flair.” - Viddy Well
"The effect of #MeToo and Time’s Up has heightened a greater desire for more female-based storytelling – and no better example of this is in a fantastic new short, co-directed by Anne De Mare and Kirsten Kelly, which highlights a interesting story from the Second World War. Fusing a mix of Live-Action with Animation, courtesy of Dashamation Studios, The Girl with the Rivet Gun takes us on an enlightening journey!” - Film & TV Now
Made entirely by women filmmakers - including Emmy Award winning directors Anne de Mare and Kirsten Kelly, Christopher Award winning producer Elizabeth Hemmerdinger, and Helen Hill Award winning animator Danielle Ash - The Girl with the Rivet Gun serves as entry point to a rich, layered, and adventurous rewriting of history as herstory, inspiring conversations about working women everywhere.
